Book Talk: Stop Comparing My Books

Aug •  9 •  2013

Hey everyone I hope everyone is having a good summer vacation..or at least what is left of it. Today on Book Talk I wanted to talk about how readers (including myself) judge compare different genre books from the same author. I can’t say that I haven’t done this because I have and so have you and so I would like to discuss on what I think about that.

I will be mentioning a couple authors that I know of that write for instance both Young Adult and Adult genre books that I have compared writing styles and story lines but I will be focusing on one author that seems to have the most controversy right now…

J.K. Rowling

So we all the know the infamous J.K. Rowling and the wonderful world of Harry Potter that she created. Harry Potter took the world for a surprise and today it is known around the world and it is looked up to as the cornerstone for all great magical stories that has every been written. From the mind blowing words, to the capturing films, to the world of Hogwarts created at different parks around the world, this world is something we all, as readers, have come to cherish more so than others.

However, we all knew that the series would come to an end. And with all the emotions that readers grew throughout the series we thought in the back of our minds…what would J.K.Rowling do next. Rowling came out with her Adult Novel The Casual Vacancy and the first reactions that people were saying was “I can’t wait to read it.” but then the cover released and that is where the first judgmental comments arose.  People didn’t understand the cover and questioned why that cover. I haven’t read the story so I can’t tell you but maybe it has to relate to something in the book. I guess the only way to find out is to read.

Then, the book came out and I thought everyone was going to die. People could not finish the book, people DNF’d it. I was thinking to myself, how is this book so bad. But then I started to hear people comment on how it was not like Harry Potter. And I thought to myself why would it be like Harry Potter. As much as I wanted it to resemble to world that got me into reading. Harry Potter was over. And then I thought to myself hello everyone this is an ADULT  novel…Not a children’s book.

Maybe everyone is still wanting the world of Harry Potter to still show itself in her new book. Maybe they haven’t moved on yet. I know I haven’t..I want to be truthful when I say that I cried like a little brat when the book was finished and I had this big plan to hunt down J.K. Rowling and demand for her to continue the series. But no matter how much I begged and pleaded and cried..the world was over but never gone.

This is what I think people need to realize. That every author is going to write a book or series and two series might be a different genre and I think we can not just be mad because because they are not a like because would we really want to read two different series from the same author that were some what similar..I don’t think I would, I would want something new and exciting.

So now differnet authors that write for more than one genre

1. Gena Showalter

2. Neil Gaiman

3. Andrea Creamer

There are so many more out that my brain can not come to a conclusion about and I think the same goes for all these authors. I am not saying that it is wrong to compare books of different genres but that are by the same author. We are free to think what we want..it is a free country after all.

So I just challenge you the next time you pick up a series by an author who you know by either their other genres that they may dabble with and see if you still want to compare or if you want to take the book as a book that is a completely different journey with new adventures from an author you love.

As always Happy Reading!!!!!

Thank you for finally mentioning something I’ve always thought. I find it really annoying when people compare one writer’s book to the other. The only time I think it should be compared is if it’s to compare the writing and such. I do sometimes do this, but I try not to compare series or books by the same author because every book should be a new experience.

  2. Awesome post. I’ve done this before, but try not to. I don’t want to read two books that are alike by the same author. I like to know what other worlds, and stories, they can offer me.

This is a good point. I haven’t read The Casual Vacancy, but I guess I expected it to not be anything like HP, so maybe I would enjoy it more than some others. But I honestly just don’t have the urge to read it, it’s not really a genre I enjoy much. But it sure makes me understand why she used a pseudonym for her next book!
Some authors I consider must-reads, but really it’s only when it’s something that appeals to me.

  4. If I enjoy a series or a book so much I might try the author is different genres. Sometimes it is such a surprise to find how well they write in any genre sometimes not but I agree… give it a chance. Great post.

I think it’s only natural to compare books but I try to judge each book on its own. Sometimes I follow authors across genres and sometimes I don’t. It depends on how much I like the author, whether I like the new genre (I can’t think of any author who could lead me to high fantasy), and how good the new book looks.

I don’t understand how anyone could go into The Casual Vacancy expecting something similar Harry Potter. It’s not Harry Potter! That’s why I didn’t read it.
