It's a night like any other on board the Icarus. Then, catastrophe strikes: the massive luxury spaceliner is yanked out of hyperspace and plummets into the nearest planet. Lilac LaRoux and Tarver Merendsen survive. And they seem to be alone.

Lilac is the daughter of the richest man in the universe. Tarver comes from nothing, a young war hero who learned long ago that girls like Lilac are more trouble than they’re worth. But with only each other to rely on, Lilac and Tarver must work together, making a tortuous journey across the eerie, deserted terrain to seek help.

Then, against all odds, Lilac and Tarver find a strange blessing in the tragedy that has thrown them into each other’s arms. Without the hope of a future together in their own world, they begin to wonder—would they be better off staying here forever?

Everything changes when they uncover the truth behind the chilling whispers that haunt their every step. Lilac and Tarver may find a way off this planet. But they won’t be the same people who landed on it.

A timeless love story, THESE BROKEN STARS sets into motion a sweeping science fiction series of companion novels. The Starbound Trilogy: Three worlds. Three love stories. One enemy.

Our Favorite Things: Amie and Meg pick their best bits

Blog Tour 7

One of the best things about co-authoring is the lovely surprises you encounter when your partner writes something you didn’t see coming—whether it’s an inspired twist, a piece of breath-taking imagery or a awesome joke, it’s always a heap of fun to see what the other person came up with. Today, we’re each picking two of our favorite things that the other person wrote to share!

Amie:

As those of you who’ve read Skylark will know, Meg loves exploring flawed heroines, and watching to see what happens when apparent weakness are forged by trials into surprising strengths. Often in stories you see heroines who start out weak and feminine (where one is equated with the other), and they become stronger (and take on more male qualities, through dress, hair or behavior) as the story continues. If they start out strong, it’s again often signaled through those male qualities.

Not so with Lilac. Lilac loves her dresses, she mourns her ruined shoes and broken nails—and over the course of the story she proves that she’ll absolutely kick your ass if that’s what the situation calls for. Lilac is forged and strengthened by her circumstances, and she steps up to handle challenges she never could have imagined, but she remains absolutely and firmly a girl while she does it, and I love that about her.

The other thing I love about Meg’s writing is her gorgeous imagery—I’ve included here one of my absolute favorites:

Tarver lowers himself down again, arm circling my waist. His voice is soft and warm by my ear. “What is this place?”

I have no answer for him, and we watch the false moon in silence. For a dizzying moment I see us as if from above, a tiny lump in the blue-black sea of grass, nearly swallowed by the vastness of the plains.

Meg:

Between chapters, These Broken Stars features snatches of an interrogation between Tarver and an unknown questioner. The reader doesn’t know what’s happening or why, but a few things quickly become apparent: Tarver’s a good guy, honest and upstanding, and in this interrogation his behavior is out of character. He clearly doesn’t like his questioner, and more than that, the story he’s telling is diverging wildly from the truth. Alongside the mystery of what will happen in the story itself is the mystery of these interstitials: what could possibly bring a guy like Tarver to lie like this? What’s he trying to hide, or protect, and will he succeed?

Amie has a real talent at writing banter and finding the exact right cutting remark at the exact right time. One of my favorite parts of the book is toward the beginning, right after they’ve crashed, and Lilac still hasn’t figured out that they’re in serious trouble. She’s still treating their time on the planet like an afternoon outing.

Eventually I give up. “Would you like a rest?”

She considers the question, then nods, reaching up to tuck her hair back where it belongs. “Where will I sit?”

Sit? Why, on this comfortable chaise longue I’ve carried here for you in my pocket, Your Highness, so glad you asked.

My other favorite thing? It’s the swoon. You know what I’m talking about. Tarver’s sense of humor, his gentleness, his toughness, and… yeah, that bit where he takes his shirt off. So sue me.

How fun! I had to laugh over that second choice of favorite quote. I can see how these two would get on each other’s nerves at first. I love the idea of a mystery too with the false testimony.

Clever banter, eh? If I wasn’t already in, I would be now. That second quote is hilarious!

Can’t wait to read this! Especially if Tarver’s got such a sense of humor!

This has to be one of my most highly anticipated book releases ever. I have been devouring these little tidbits 😉 The gorgeous cover drew my eye, but it’s the reviews that have me counting down the days to its release!

  5. I loved that the beautiful dress on the cover played so much of a role in the book. It is gorgeous and Lilac has every right to be sad over it’s slow destruction. This was a really cute introspective, thanks for participating!

  6. I love the idea behind this guest post! I’ve always wondered how two authors can collaborate on a novel together and it seems like these two really enjoyed the experience. It’s great to hear that Lilac retains her femininity and still enjoy her frilly things but is still tough when needed. You don’t see that much in YA and it’s refreshing to hear!

I could definitely get along with Lilac. I will beat you if I need to, but I will mourn if my outfit/hair/makeup/nail get ruined in the process. And Tarver sounds like the humorous character that I can definitely get behind. Can’t wait to get started reading this book!

  8. I’m so curious about this book. I also admit, the cover totally drew me in and then the blurb in that order. LOL Now with the blog post, I’m even more curious.

I love the idea of a girly heroine who’s also really strong. I agree that so often we either get one or the other!

I feel like Lilac and Tarver’s relationship changes significantly by the end of the book – there are a lot of things that they’ll have to deal with. I’m excited to see where that goes. And I really just love the world that Amie and Meg have built!

The plot sounds interesting and is enough to make me want the book, but there’s a little extra desire to see how the authors handle twists the other throws in!

I am so excited for this book to come out because I feel as if I will thoroughly enjoy this book. It has everything a girl will ever want, a cute boy and girl marooned on a deserted planet, a little bit of romeo and Juliet with the whole rich girl poor guy sort of thing, and come on who doesn’t like the sound of “3 worlds, 3 love stories, 1 enemy”?

  24. I love Lilac’s strength and Tarver’s snark too. The interrogation scenes were brilliant. I like that you couldn’t tell his testimony was deviating until later on. And YES to the swooning and the moments when Tarver’s shirt comes off. In my opinion, he should never be allowed to wear one because that would just be fantastic.

I’m so excited I really just can’t wait to read another epic love story. The last YA love story I really fell head over heels in love with was August and Hazel so I have high hopes for Lilac and Tarver’s love story!!

The fact that these authors obviously, genuinely respect and care for each other makes me excited for the story. Very. I look forward to their different mixes in the story, and the camaraderie as well!

What I just discovered about this series, that I find absolutely interesting is that each book in this trilogy follows a different couple. Very unique
