Deep in the ocean, in a world not so different from our own, live the merpeople. Their communities are spread throughout the oceans, seas, and freshwaters all over the globe.

When Serafina, a mermaid of the Mediterranean Sea, awakens on the morning of her betrothal, her biggest worry should be winning the love of handsome Prince Mahdi. And yet Sera finds herself haunted by strange dreams that foretell the return of an ancient evil. Her dark premonitions are confirmed when an assassin's arrow poisons Sera's mother. Now, Serafina must embark on a quest to find the assassin's master and prevent a war between the Mer nations. Led only by her shadowy dreams, Sera searches for five other mermaid heroines who are scattered across the six seas. Together, they will form an unbreakable bond of sisterhood and uncover a conspiracy that threatens their world's very existence.

Deep Blue Blog Tour Banner FINAL

I am super excite to be a part of this blog tour for Deep Blue by: Jennifer Donnelly. Down below is an interview where Jennifer tells us how Deep Blue came to be.

1.       What inspired you to write the book?

A ghost. The ghost of the designer Alexander McQueen. I saw an exhibition of his work a couple of years ago in NYC and was completely blown away by it, especially by his sea-inspired collections. I came home from the exhibition wanting desperately to work on a story about the sea, and that very night, my agent called to tell me Disney had an idea they wanted me to work on – involving mermaids and the sea.

2.      Why did you specifically choose mermaids and not something else?

The mermaids chose me. DEEP BLUE is the first book in the Waterfire Saga – an epic series that Disney-Hyperion approached me to write. It’s been a super cool collaboration and I’ve loved seeing all the extra things Disney’s artists cook up – like the sketches for the characters and their environments, or the mermaid video at waterfiresaga.com, or “Open Your Eyes,” a song inspired by the book and sung by Bea Miller.

3.       Do you see yourself in the book as a specific character?

I wish I could say I’m Serafina, who’s so selfless and dedicated, or Ling, who’s so smart, but I’m probably Astrid, who’s obstinate, tactless, and quick-tempered.

4.       If you could go back a re-write a scene would you? If yes, which one?

If my editors didn’t pull my manuscripts out of my hands, I’d rewrite every page in every book I’ve ever written. There’s always something – a description, overwordiness, dialogue – that I’m itching to make better.

5.      Where do you find it the easiest to write?

In my office at home. Some authors can kick out pages on trains and planes and in hotel rooms, but I’m not so great at that. Too busy looking out the window. And I need my stuff around me. My books. My bulletin boards. My teapot. My bag of mint M & Ms. And my dogs.

Not all mermaid stories work for me, but am willing to give this one a try!
