Grieving the death of her godfather and haunted by her cousin Cassie’s betrayal, Barrie returns from a trip to San Francisco to find the Watson plantation under siege. Ghost-hunters hope to glimpse the ancient spirit who sets the river on fire each night, and reporters chase rumors of a stolen shipment of Civil War gold that may be hidden at Colesworth Place. The chaos turns dangerous as Cassie hires a team of archeologists to excavate beneath the mansion ruins. Because more is buried there than treasure.

A stranger filled with magic arrives at Watson’s Landing claiming that the key to the Watson and Beaufort gifts—and the Colesworth curse—also lies beneath the mansion. With a mix of threats and promises, the man convinces Barrie and Cassie to cast a spell there at midnight. But what he conjures may have deadly consequences.

While Barrie struggles to make sense of the escalating peril and her growing and forbidden feelings for Eight Beaufort, it’s impossible to know whom to trust and what to fight for—Eight or herself. Millions of dollars and the fate of the founding families is at stake. Now Barrie must choose between what she feels deep in her heart and what will keep Watson’s Landing safe in this stunning addition to a series filled with “decadent settings, mysterious magic, and family histories rife with debauchery”

I’m so excited that I have read this book. I totally loved the first one and well this story is just too good to not talk about.

Plot: Alright so lets get right to it. The plot followed Barrie as she struggles to get her life back together. Much has happen over the course of the first book so Barrie is adjusting. So many changes brings Barrie to making lots of decisions some good and others well….not so good. Still the plot brings more people into Barrie’s life, making it much more interesting. More information about the “curse” is developing and there are some new characters that what a hand in it. The plot moves at a somewhat slow to medium pace. Some parts are just flowing while others get stuck in the same place.

Relationships: Lots of Barrie’s past and new relationships are growing. She is learning who to trust and who not to trust. I like that this story explores Barrie’s and Eight’s relationship as well. As do all couples, they go through a lot of stuff and I’m hoping that they can learn to work together and not against each other. My only gripe is Barrie herself. Sometimes she would make desicions tat would just drive me batty. Like WHY???

Ending: Since the “curse” information is all boiling up, I can’t wait to see how the story will end. Much is revealed yet so much needs to be answered. I’m ready for the next book!

Persuasion dispenses a dynamic tone leading the reader to read to the end. It captures its own unique thrill of magic and lore. Take a chance and read the story.
