For Cricket Thompson, a summer like this one will change everything. A summer spent on Nantucket with her best friend, Jules Clayton, and the indomitable Clayton family. A summer when she’ll make the almost unattainable Jay Logan hers. A summer to surpass all dreams.

Some of this turns out to be true. Some of it doesn’t.

When Jules and her family suffer a devastating tragedy that forces the girls apart, Jules becomes a stranger whom Cricket wonders whether she ever really knew. And instead of lying on the beach working on her caramel-colored tan, Cricket is making beds and cleaning bathrooms to support herself in paradise for the summer.

But it’s the things Cricket hadn’t counted on--most of all, falling hard for someone who should be completely off-limits--that turn her dreams into an exhilarating, bittersweet reality.

A beautiful future is within her grasp, and Cricket must find the grace to embrace it. If she does, her life could be the perfect shade of Nantucket blue

After reading nothing but fantasy, action packed book, and even a science fiction novel, I needed to take a break and jump into a sweet contemporary novel that will make me cry, fall in love, and feel real.

I have to be honest when saying that I did almost DNF’d this book because of the beginning. I did lose connection with the main character and was somewhat feeling pissed at her because of her actions and I wanted to jump in and tell her to stop. I guess now that taking time and wondering what I would do if faced with the situation and wonder if I would do the same things or not. To be truthful, I don’t know.  I guess I will have to wait to be in this situation but I really do hope I never will face what the character does in this story. Moving on…

I continued the book and found myself pushing past that little predicament in the beginning and found myself falling in love with the things that I wanted the book to bring me when first starting. The story line was, like I said before, “real.” I felt like this could book could be someone’s actual life that we were reading about and seeing the events play out through their eyes. The emotion built up inside that when the book finished I was pleased with what the book brought me.

The main character is where I found myself not liking the book. I thought she was great up until the part where she thought she had to find a way to Nantucket to be with her friend. At this point I felt that she needed to take it back a little and let her friend breathe. Here friend and her family had just gone through some troubling event and I felt the last thing she needed breathing down her neck was her friend trying to push herself back into everything. That’s how I feel about that, however, as the book continued the main character redeemed herself by showing a different side that readers will come to fall in love with.

I think that with every book there is always some drama and trust me this book wasn’t shy with that. Cat fight! That is all I have to say on this topic.

Overall Nantucket Blue was a book that had a rough beginning but finished with the reader wanting more. Overall pleased, Nantucket Blue is the contemporary book of the year.

I give it 4 bites!

  1. Not huge on the dramalicious type of reads, but I am an ending girl. So, I do think I could like this one and glad to know to stick it out to the end!

That’s interesting that you felt that it was heavy on the drama because I felt it was light on the drama. For a YA contemp anyway. I also connected more with her so I understood her actions, maybe I was kind of like her? I mean, I saw things she didn’t see but I understood why she didn’t see them. It’s hard to explain, I guess. But I’m glad she grew on you. I really liked her! And I’m glad you stuck with this and ended up enjoying it. 🙂
